Show me more Spider-Man! There's been a lot of focus on Spider-Man's popularity being the result of Peter Parker's 'Everyman' status. Unlike the other heroes of his day Peter wasn't popular, blond and blue-eyed and all that stuff. He was the opposite and he messed up on a regular basis and people related to that. It is, I agree, a strong reason why Spider-Man is one of the most popular fictional characters in the world. But there are other reasons. One of them would be Steve Ditko's excellent, iconic costume design. The red and blue costume just works. Watch any of the Spider-Man movies and you'll see how arresting and right it just is. Even in the comics they tried to change it twice. The first time was in the mid-eighties when Spider-Man started wearing the black costume. Then in the nineties they tried to switch it to the Scarlet Spider costume. No go. Ditko's design remains the Spider-Man costume. If you're a Spider-Man fan or you're looking to get a gift for one I hope this shortlist helps. As you can see the Spider has made it into nearly any kind of merchandise conceivable. Have fun choosing! |
