I ‘m here in the Philippines and we do have our comics specialty shops. I haven’t bought a comicbook for some time and there came a day that I wanted me some Daredevil. Maybe because I had been watching the Netflix series.
So in I went and asked for the latest issue of DD and a backing board and a plastic sleeve to protect my purchase. The whole transaction came up to a little over 7 dollars when converted to the local peso currency. 7 bucks for a floppy. No way. I backed out. With some regret because I dearly love owning my comics in physical form. I went out of that shop bemusedly wishing I was a millionaire.
These days I get my comics digitally from Comixology. Specifically, I always pick out collections from Comixology’s monthly Sales events.
I knew about Comixology way before they got bought by Amazon. I can’t say enough good things about their customer service. One time I bought three Avengers collections and my purchases would not go through. I filed a ticket with them. They got back to me and admitted that there was a glitch then they returned my money and gave me the three trades for free. Another time my brother was buying a complete collection of Fables but he inadvertently bought one of the affiliated spin off, one of those Jack of Fables books, I think. He asked Comixology to get the book back and give him a refund claiming that his purchasing pattern clearly implied that he was going after the main series. Not only did Comixology give him a refund, they let him keep the book.
So digital comics. Purely for the story, no value as a collectible. No tactile pleasure of leafing over the pages or smelling your comics or being able to box or shelve them, and all of you who’ve done this know that it’s part of the joy of collecting.
And I do miss it. But the prices of physical books are a real barrier to me now. Still, I do fantasize about that beautiful shelf of Marvel Omnibuses and DC Absolute Editions. But a fantasy it must remain.
I do have to have my comicbook hit though, so Comixology it is. My comicbook collection, just like my book collection in Kindle, is extremely portable. Comixology’s GV or Guided View allows reading comics even using a smartphone to be not only doable but pleasurable.
For my books I used to buy Amazon sale books from Bookbub but have since paid full Amazon prices. So I’m sure that one fine day I’ll simply move away from Comixology monthly sales and pay full comixology prices for my comics. So be it.
If I do become a millionaire though, comics specialty shop here I come!
