A Guide To Batman Comics

Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 published May 1939. 'Detective' was a comic that specialized on tough and rough tales of crime and the private investigators who solved them. Batman proved so popular - selling well over a million copies - that he 'hijacked' Detective Comics. Also debuting in Detective Comics was Dick Grayson, Robin, the Boy Wonder.

One book wasn't enough for the Batman's appeal so Batman #1 debuted in the Spring of 1940.

Both Detective Comics and Batman are still being published today; they comprise the core books in the Batman mythos.

The Brave and the Bold was a comic devoted to team-ups between DC characters.  To date, there have been three volumes of The Brave and the Bold. The first volume ran from 1955 to 1983. In 1966, issue #67 onwards featured Batman team-ups with other DC characters.

Batman was always the Justice Leagues secret weapon - the hero most likely to be underestimated by opponents. He was also a loner who was the most likely hero to leave the team. In 1983, he did - to form a team of his own: the Outsiders . Functioning as both leader and mentor, Batman led Metamorpho, Black Lightning, Katana, Geo-Force and Halo for 46 issues of Batman and the Outsiders until June of 1987.

In 1986, Frank Miller created the legendary four-issue The Dark Knight Returns and changed Batman and comics forever.

From 1989 to 2007, Legends of the Dark Knight would be published, showcasing some of the strongest Batman stories ever told.

Not all Batman books are about the Bat. Here are two of the best:

Dick Grayson reinvented himself as Nightwing in the pages of the New Teen Titans and had his own series from 1996 to 2009.

Gotham Central was a critically acclaimed series about the Gotham Central Police Department that ran from 2003 to 2006.
